Painting FAQ
What causes exterior paint to chalk?
Some degree of chalking is normal. Excessive film erosion can result in unsightly heavy chalk. Excessive chalking is caused by the disintegration of the paint film during weathering. Some common causes of heavy chalking include application to an unsealed surface, overspreading the paint, or poor quality paint.
Can you paint in cool weather?
Yes, we can paint in almost freezing conditions using a low temp paint. The low temp paint can be tinted to almost any color.
What is the most common cause of blistering and peeling paint on the exterior?
The most common cause is moisture. If water can get behind the paint it will create this effect. Proper preparation eliminates this problem.
Can aluminum or vinyl siding be painted?
Yes. Vinyl siding must be painted no darker than the original color because dark colors absorb heat from the sun and may cause warping or buckling.
Can you paint my metal lawn furniture?
Yes.
Can you paint my wicker lawn furniture?
Yes.
Can you paint my gutters?
Yes.
What type of coating is best for wood decks and fences?
A penetrating deck stain/sealer tends to work best on the horizontal surfaces (flooring) of decks due to constant foot traffic. The vertical surfaces of decks and fences may be stained or painted according to personal preference.
Does the color of the paint have anything to do with its durability outside?
For the most part, no. Bright reds, yellows and violets tend to fade the worst, especially in sunny areas.
How do you determine what type of roller cover to use?
A 3/8" to 1/2" nap roller cover is recommended for wall paint being applied to smooth drywall or plaster. Rough plaster and stucco walls may require a 3/4" to 1" nap cover. Use a 1 1/4" nap cover when painting concrete block or other extremely rough surfaces and the 3/16" nap cover is recommended to apply an ultra smooth finish when using an enamel.
Do I have to be home while your painting?
No, we treat your home/property with respect whether you are home or not. We are insured/bonded and we know our employees, you are in good hands. If you would like to be home while we work then that's fine too.
What kind of paint do you use?
We use Sherwin Williams latex paint most of the time. Oil paint is being phased out and its harder to dispose of and clean up. Latex paints have come a long way in the past few years and are suitable for most jobs.
What kind of odor should I expect and for how long?
Latex paint produces a very low odor and is usually gone within a day or two. The odor does not bother most people. If you have bad allergies or other breathing problems you may want to stay out of the house while the workers are painting.
Do you leave touch up paint?
When we complete a job we give the home owner the option of keeping un-used paint. We keep what paint was used where on file, if you ever need to know what color/sheen we used just give us a call.
When can I clean my windows after you have painted them?
It takes roughly two weeks for paint to completely cure, so we recommend not using cleaning products on paint less than two weeks old.
How much is all this going to cost me?
An average size room (225 sq ft) ranges from $300 - $500. There are a lot of variables that come into play but that's a good guess-ta-mit to work with.
The exterior of an average house will run from $1800 - $3600. Again, there are a lot of variables.
Who takes everything off the walls and moves the furniture?
Generally we do. When we move furniture and take items down we put them back where they was unless the home owner says otherwise. If you want to help you can take items off the walls, shelves, etc. If you don't want to mess with it then don't worry about it.
Am I going to need new carpet after you get done?
If you do its not going to be because of us. We cover everything in plastic so accidents can't happen. We carry a million dollars worth of insurance so should something happen it will be taken care of. You are in good hands.
